Glen Murray, Minister MOECC Leaves Government of Ontario

Posted on 2017-08-01

The Hon. Glen Murray, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, is resigning from government and exiting politics to become Executive Director of the Pembina Institute.

After serving as mayor of Winnipeg, he was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2010 as MPP for Toronto Centre. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2014. In a cabinet shuffle following the 2014 provincial election, Mr. Murray was from moved to the portfolio of Minister of Transportation to Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

Throughout his political career, he has been high-profile champion for the environment, and has had many successes advancing waste reduction and EPR legislation. He was also the first to integrate circular economic concepts into policy. Most notably, in June 2016, after two failed attempts to replace the WDA, 2002, the Waste-Free Ontario Act was passed under his watch.

Following the adoption of the Act, in 2017 the Ministry released the accompanying Strategy for a Waste-Free Ontario: Building the Circular Economy which provides a long-term vision for a circular economy through and zero-waste and zero greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector.

More on Bill 151 : More on the strategy

The MWA has enjoyed working with the Minister since 2014. He recognized that waste reduction and resource efficiency are key components in the fight against climate change and the foundation for a circular economy. The waste legislation and strategy developed under his leadership will benefit the province for years to come. MWA wishes him the best in his new role, and we look forward to working with incoming minister Chris Ballard on upcoming priorities.

Municipal Resource Recovery and Research Collaborative (M3RC)

Posted on 2017-07-09

Please click on the Information Note from the MWA, AMO, RPWCO and the City of Toronto who have formed a new entity named the Municipal Recovery and Research Collaborative (M3RC).
The role of M3RC is to listen carefully to the Ontario municipal sector, feed this information into the process, promote municipal interests, and provide updates and resources that will help municipalities manage contracts and to make the best possible decisions for their own local programs and communities.
The MWA wants to assure all our members that there will be an extensive consultation process to ensure full participation by you and your decision makers and I encourage you to please read and circulate these two documents to your municipal staff and Council.
