York Region leads large Ontario municipalities with 94-per-cent waste diversion rate – or is that 66 per cent? Provincial authority doesn't count incineration as a way to meet targets. Regional councillors asked for nine-tenths of what York throws away – 362,665 tonnes last year – to be kept out of a landfill the region uses in Niagara Falls. With a 94-per-cent diversion rate in 2023, the region exceeded that goal for the seventh year straight. "We're actually No. 1 in the province last year among large urban municipalities," including Toronto and Peel Region, and "first in that category for quite a number of years now," Julie Hordowick, program manager of York's integrated waste management strategy said in an interview.
